Pharmacy Technician Job Description
A Pharmacy Technician is responsible for helping Pharmacists under close supervision perform technical daily tasks related to pharmaceutical care to serve customers in an accurate and timely manner. The duties include filling and labeling prescriptions, interacting with customers to answer questions or give them their prescriptions, and collaborating with healthcare providers.
Pharmacy Technician Duties and Responsibilities
Pharmacy Technicians are responsible for ensuring the availability of medication and delivering medications to the right patients. The following duties are intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities and are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties. Here are some of the primary duties and responsibilities:
- ● Provides customer service at check-out
- ● Receives and triages phone calls from patients and healthcare providers, answering their questions and referring various inquiries to the Pharmacist
- ● Collects accurate patient information
- ● Performs data entry and processes prescriptions electronically, ensuring all information is accurate and complete
- ● Performs calculations
- ● Follows proper billing procedures
- ● Supports pharmacological services by assembling, stocking and distributing medications
- ● Performs compounding of topical and oral medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist
- ● Maintains records by recording and filing the prescriptions and orders of Physicians
- ● Orders medications, medical equipment, over-the-counter products and pharmacy supplies
- ● Sorts, stocks and labels medications and monitors inventory
- ● Undertakes administrative tasks such as record-keeping as assigned by a manager from time to time
- ● Complies with rules, regulations and procedures to help maintain a clean and safe pharmacy
- ● Follows proper drug and chemical storage procedures
- ● Maintains and cleans pharmaceutical equipment
Required Elements
- ● A high school diploma or GED equivalent
- ● 18 years of age or older
- ● Current State of Alaska Pharmacy Technician License, or ability to apply and receive within 30 days of hire
Preferred Elements
- ● Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification
- ● Previous pharmacy or related experience
Preferred Skills
- ● Knowledge of pharmaceutical equipment and instruments
- ● Knowledge of the regulations and practice standards of pharmaceutical care
- ● Knowledge of drug names, drug strengths, and dosage forms
- ● Knowledge of applicable computer system software programs
- ● Skill in using pharmaceutical equipment and instruments
- ● Skill in critical thinking in the performance of pharmaceutical care activities
- ● Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other medical professionals
Additional Requirements
- ● If exposure to hazardous materials and medications, sharp objects, and infectious diseases is present, must don appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
- ● The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:
- ○ Must be able to lift approximately 30 pounds
- ○ May be exposed to hazardous materials and medication, sharp objects and infectious diseases
- ○ This position requires the ability to sit or stand for long periods of time
- ○ May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule
